MIDI File Formats: Type 0, 1, and 2

MIDI files come in three flavors.

Type 0

All channels merged into a single track. Simple, portable.

Type 1

Multiple tracks (one per instrument). Best for editing.

Type 2

Multiple independent patterns. Rare in practice.

Which to use?

For sharing and playing, Type 0 is safest. For production, Type 1 gives you the most control.
